Safety and Standardization of Fragrance Materials: Challenges and Opportunities
India is known for its perfumes, fragrances, and flavors. Fragrance materials are widely used in consumer products meant for newborns to the elderly population. These include cosmetics, detergents, fabric softeners, household cleaning products, fine fragrances, aromatherapy, and air fresheners, among others. The fragrance and flavor market is expected to grow at 5.6% CAGR, reaching USD 35.5 bn by 2020. India’s projected growth is ~ 12% CAGR for the next 5 years (40% of the global market). This growth brings the challenge of safety assessment and standardization.
