The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) evaluates and distributes scientific data on the safety assessment of fragrance raw materials found in perfumes, cosmetics, shampoos, creams, detergents, air fresheners, candles and other personal and household products. RIFM’s safety evaluation process is modeled after the National Academy of Sciences Elements of Risk Assessment and Risk Management and all of RIFM’s scientific findings are evaluated by an independent, scientific Expert Panel (REXPAN)—an international group of dermatologists, pathologists, toxicologists and environmental scientists.

RIFM provides its members with well documented conclusions drawn from comprehensive analysis resulting in enhanced product management and the safe use of life enriching products for the consumer. RIFM distributes information through electronic bulletins to members, publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, in-person presentations at professional societies, individual companies, government agencies and industry and trade associations and through subscription to RIFM’s Database of Fragrance and Flavor Materials. Based on chemical structure, quantity of use and consumer exposure, it is the most comprehensive source worldwide for toxicology data, literature and information on the safety evaluation of fragrance and flavor materials. The RIFM Database is operated with the full cooperation of the Flavor and Extracts Manufacturing Association (FEMA) and is only available by subscription to RIFM and FEMA members.
